How to print WhatsApp messages: Your chat as a book, PDF or .txt file

Would you like to print your WhatsApp chat? Whether as a plain text file, PDF or bound book – it’s possible! Read our guide on how you can export your messages, images, voice messages, videos and emojis to WhatsApp as an iOS or Android user.

These are your options:

Option 1: Print your WhatsApp chat as a txt. file for free (instructions for iOS & Android)
Option 2: WhatsApp chat as a book or PDF (incl. pictures, voice messages, videos etc.)

To print your chat history, you can use WhatsApp’s free export function to send your chat as a plain text file and then print the file.
You can then open the text file on your computer using the pre-installed editor. This file contains the date and time at which the individual messages were sent, the messages themselves and the emojis.

For iOS (iPhone):

1. Open the WhatsApp Chat you want to print
2. Click on the name of your chat partner
3. Scroll down and select “Export Chat”
4. Select „Add Media”or “Without Media”, depending, on whether you would like to include the media files or not
5. Choose how you want to export the chat – e.g. via E-Mail, AirDrop or save it in your phone’s files.

Your chat is sent as a ZIP file, containing a txt. file and your media files.

You can then simply print the tx.t file.

For Android

1. Open the WhatsApp Chat you want to print
2. Click on the three dots in the top right hand corner
3. Click on “More” and then “Export Chat”
4. Select „”Without Media” or “Including Media“
5. Choose how you would like to export your chat – e.g. via E-Mail, Google Drive or save it to your smartphone.

You can then simply print the txt. file.

You can convert the txt file into a PDF with just a few clicks:
– macOS: Open the file and go to ‘Export as PDF’ under ‘File’. Now just select a storage location and you’re done.
– Windows: Open the file with Word. Click on ‘File’ at the top left and on ‘Save as’. Select the storage location and choose ‘PDF’ as the file type/file format. Save now.

You can edit the exported text file and print only the part you need. Alternatively, you can also take a screenshot of the individual message directly in WhatsApp and print it out.

When you send your chat via e-Mail it is sent as a plain text file with emojis – and that is the biggest downside of this option: pictures, voice messages and videos are “lost”.

WhatsApp does export pictures, videos and voice messages (just make sure to select “add media” in the export process), but it saves them in a separate folder and does not integrate them into your chat.

If you want to get the typical look of your WhatsApp conversation history, you need to export the chat using the zapptales software or apps. You can find out how to do this in the next section.

To print your chat history as a book, you only need to carry out the following four steps:

You can also design the book completely individually: you choose the cover, dedication and background. Deleting individual messages and images or adding them later is also no problem.
