With zapptales you can print your WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger chat and transform it into a unique book – the perfect gift or to hold on to your best memories. With zapptales you have the possibility to edit your WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger messages, deleting those you don‘t want to include in your book, changing the size of the pictures, choosing a cool background and personalizing names and colors.

The process of generating the book of your WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger chat is fully automated – from your chat export until the book is in your hands. That means that your information is not seen by anyone but you.

In order to keep your data safe, our website is completely SSL-encrypted. Your data are processed on high security servers in Germany.

The privacy of your data is very important to us! For this reason, your videos and voice messages are saved on high security servers in Germany and the data transfer is encrypted.

Only you or someone holding the book in their hands and with a QR Code scanner has access to your videos and voice messages.

You can delete your chat via the zapptales app at any time you want.

  • Android: Open the zapptales app, go to “My chats”, click on the chat for a few seconds and choose “Delete”;
  • iPhone: Open the zapptales app, go to “My chats” and swipe from right to left in order to delete it;

Important: this process of deleting cannot be undone. Your data and what you edited until then will be deleted. If you want to edit your chat again afterwards you will have to export the chat from WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger and start editing it again.

General questions about our chat books

Voice messages and videos are uploaded on the editing page as well. On the editing page you can decide whether you want them in your book or not. If you activated them on the editing page, they appear as QR codes on the editing page and later in the book. You can scan them with the QR code scanner in our app or with any QR code scanner of your choice.

Both formats (hard cover and soft cover) have a portrait format in DIN A5 size (14.8 x 21.0 cm).

No, there is no page limit. You can print your entire chat as a book. So that you don’t have to lug around bricks and for the binding to be as crisp in 10 years’ time as it is today, chats with more than 500 pages are automatically divided into volumes. The FAQ point “How are very long chats divided into volumes?” tells you more about how exactly this is done.

Yes, that’s possible. With this, you can, e.g.; Add new messages to a chat you have already uploaded or add a part which is missing due to changing your phone or phone number. You can even combine WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger chats in one book with this option 😎

In order that it works, you first need to upload the chats separately to zapptales and then inform our support team via support@zapptales.com. The team will then start the merge directly via our software. 😊

Important: It’s only possible to merge two different chats without a time overlap. In case of an overlap, please tell us the period of each chat you’d like in your book.

You can access your videos and voice messages at any time by using the QR Code scanner in our zapptales app or by using any other QR Code scanner of your choice. 😊

Yes, you can! 😊 As the files are saved on high security servers, they are available for you 24/7 – even if you have deleted the videos or voice messages from your phone or your chat at some point.

To print your WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger chat as a book, you can choose between a softcover and hardcover version. Both versions are printed in a DIN A5 format (14.8 x 21.0 cm). The cover has a thickness of 2mm and we use 115g/qm glossy paper for the print.

We know that memories are something to treasure. And to make sure that you can enjoy leafing through those memories time and again, we adhere to a very high quality standard.

The facts: Our books are printed in a high quality printing process at a specialized printer in Germany, using 115g/m² profigloss paper – in colour, of course 😊

There is no exact minimum length you chat needs to have – yet, to turn it into a book, it needs at least 36 pages. But don’t worry – if your chat has less than 36 pages, our software adds plain pages and you can still print a book. On these pages, you can add personal notes, write down your thoughts or add more pictures to make your book even more personal! 😊

There is no data limitation if you want to print your WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger chat – your chat can be as long as you want. Very long chats are simply divided into volumes.

Currently, we print WhatsApp chats and Facebook Messenger chats as a book. We are already working on integrating other messaging services.

If you have ordered your book or PDF with QR codes, they appear in the PDF as well. In this case, you need a QR code scanner as well to access the videos and voice messages. 😊

Questions regarding chat upload and apps

iPhone App Export

If the upload process does not seem to progress or has stopped we recommend the following steps:

  1. Check if you have the latest version of the app installed. If not, please update to the latest version through the app store.
  2. Sometimes the iPhone has some difficulties in processing big amounts of data and is not able to upload the chat if there are too many other apps opened at the same time. Therefore, we recommend you to close all other apps (by double clicking on the home button and swiping up all the other apps) and to try the upload again.
  3. Sometimes a lack of free space in the iPhone might cause the upload to stop. Please check how much memory is left on your phone. In case it is under 2 GB we recommend deleting some files in order to free some space. You can delete large videos from the galery or the temporary files from Safari.
  4. In case it’s a very long chat with a lot of media, it might be too much for our app. Please export your chat via iCloud. How it works is explained here. 😊

If, after doing these steps, it still does not work please contact our support team (support@zapptales.com).

Android App Export

I have installed the Android app and am trying to upload my chat – but the upload shows no progress or the app crashes. What can I do?

In this case, please check to following:

  • Please make sure that you always use the most recent version of our app.
  • It is important that you use a stable WiFi connection to upload your chat. If you do not have a stable connection right now, please try again once you have a stable connection.
  • It might be that you have too many other apps open in the background. Please make sure to close all these apps completely and restart the chat upload. For most Android phones, you can close your apps this way:
    1. Click on the square button at the bottom of your screen
    2. Select “close all”

Should you have tried all this and the upload still doesn’t work, please contact our customer support team: support@zapptales.com. We will find a solution for you 😊

Unfortunately, WhatsApp limits the data export for Android. When sending your chat with media, usually only the last 50 to 60 pictures, videos and voice messages and only up to 10,000 messages are sent.

However, when sending your chat without media, the limit increases to 40,000 messages. These are at least 1,000 pages! Afterwards, the pictures are directly uploaded with our zapptales app. With this, there is no limit for the number of pictures, videos and voice messages. Our app uploads as many pictures as it can find. Missing pictures, videos and voice messages can be uploaded on our chat editing page.

There are 2 folders for media for each chat. There’s one for sent media and one for received media. After choosing your name, our app knows exactly where to search for the pictures, videos and voice messages and whose pictures, videos and voice messages they are. When not choosing your name, our app might not be able to do so and it might cannot find all pictures, videos and voice messages.

General questions regarding chat upload

The app is the easiest and fastest way to upload your WhatsApp chat.

Should you have a very long chat with lots of media files that our app can’t process or should you not want to install an app, however, you can also export your chat via email. You can find out how this works here.

Please note: It is only possible to upload a WhatsApp chat via email. If you want to upload a Facebook Messenger chat, please follow these instructions.

I have already saved my WhatsApp chat externally (email, text file, cloud storage). How can I send it to zapptales?

The best way to export your WhatsApp chat is via our app. If you don’t have your chat in WhatsApp anymore, but have saved it externally, however, it is still possible to turn it into a book. There are several options:

  1. You have saved your chat as an email:
    –> If you have saved your WhatsApp chat as an email, just forward this email to en@zapptales.com
  2. You have saved your chat as a “.txt” file:
    –> If you have saved your chat as a txt- file, please send this file as an attachment to en@zapptales.com.
  3. You have saved your chat in a cloud storage (Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud):
    –> If you are able to send your chat via email using iCloud, please send it to en@zapptales.com.
    –> Should you have saved your chat to Dropbox or Google Drive, please send us the download link to en@zapptales.com.

If you have sent us your chat and have received an email called “We have received your chat, but something went wrong”, please contact our support team via support@zapptales.com.

We will find a solution so that you can transform your favourite chat into a book 😊

First of all, we ask you for your patience: With long chats or Facebook Messenger , it can take up to 15 mins or even longer until you recieve this email.

But if you still don’t receive an email containing your login data despite having been really patient, please check whether:

  • Our email got caught in your spam folder
  • Your chat is stuck in your smartphone’s outbox, in case ou have sent it via email. One small piece of advice: Sending your chat with an active WIFI connection speeds things up

Still no email? Please contact support@zapptales.com so that we can help you!

  1. First, you have to download a copy of your Facebook data (ideally to your computer);
  2. Once you have downloaded all your data you can select the chat you want to turn into a book and upload it to our software;
  3. Once you have uploaded your chat it takes about 10-20 minutes before you receive an e-mail with your login data to your personal chat edition page. Now you’re ready to get start editing your book 😊

Questions regarding chat edition and missing content

Solutions for missing content

This can have different reasons:

  • The uploading process hasn’t worked out. This can have different reasons:
    1. You have left the app during the upload and the chat upload has crashed
      • It is very important to not leave the app during the whole uploading process. In case you have left the app, you’d have to upload the chat again in order to have everything on the editing page.
    2. You don’t have a stable Wifi Connection or no Wifi connection at all and with this, the chat upload has crashed
      • Please connect your phone with a stable Wifi connection and reupload the chat
    3. There is a lot of media in your chat
      • If you have more than 1500 media in your chat, we’d recommend you to export the chat via iCloud. With this, it should definitely work. You can follow these instructions to upload it via iCloud.
  • Your media isn’t saved on your phone anymore
    In this case, you’d have to upload the media manually. This works easily via the place holders on the editing page 🙂 Please follow these instructions to do so.

There can be different reasons if you notice that there are media (pictures, photos, videos, voice messages) missing when you visit your chat edition page – and we have a solution for all of them 😉:

  1. Reason: Unfortunately, Android puts a strict limit on the amount of data that can be exported from WhatsApp. This is an Android restriction that we cannot influence.
    Solution: We have developed a solution specifically for this problem: You can upload media you have sent / received via WhatsApp from WebWhatsApp and add them to your chat book. And this is how it’s done: Step-by-step guide
  2. Reason: Our app found only a few pictures, videos or voice messages that clearly fit your chat. Unfortunately, WhatsApp doesn’t give unique IDs to media files that can be used to clearly identify where they belong in your chat. So, our app tries to find the correct media using the date stamp. Unfortunately, there is not always an exact match so our app is only able to upload those files that are a 100% match.
    Solution: We have developed a solution specifically for this problem: You can upload media you have sent / received via WhatsApp from WebWhatsApp and add them to your chat book. And this is how it’s done: Step-by-step guide
  3. Reason: Our app wasn’t able to find the pictures, voice messages and videos because they are not saved on our phone anymore (for example, if you have deleted pictures, voice messages and videos from WhatsApp or your phone) or because you have moved the to a different storage folder, an SD card or Google Drive.
    Solution: You can upload media files manually when you are on our chat edition page. Please follow these instructions to do so.
  4. Reason: If you have chosen the wrong name when your were asked to select your name during the upload process in the app, our app might have gotten confused and wasn’t able to match the media to the correct chat.
    Solution: Please upload you chat again and select the correct name.

Unfortunately, WhatsApp doesn’t export the subtitles underneath the pictures. The good news: You can add them manually 😊 Just activate the “Edit mode” and click on the pen symbol underneath the pictures.

Helpful hint: If you are using your PC to edit your book, you can also open WebWhatsApp in a separate tab to copy and paste the subtitles from your chat into your book 😊

If you’ve already sent the chat without media and it’s still incomplete, you’ve probably reached the limit for the WhatsApp chat export with Android. Unfortunately, Android limits the export to the last 40 thousand messages. This is a limit we cannot influence. However, there are different options to work around it:

 

Option 1:
In case your chat partner has an iPhone you could try to export the chat with it. With an iPhone, it’s no problem to upload the whole chat.


Option 2:
Have you exported the chat to yourself via e-mail earlier? It would then be possible to merge the two parts.

Option 3:
You could copy the messages from web.whatsapp.com and upload them to zapptales. This is how it works:

General questions regarding chat edition

Once you have exported your WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger chat to zapptales, our software stores it for 4 weeks. Every time you return to the chat edition page, this time period starts anew: That means that your most recent status is always saved for another 4 weeks. After these 4 weeks, your chat is automatically deleted in order to protect your data. But don’t worry, we will send you a reminder shortly before the 4 weeks are over.

You want to print your WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger chat as a book, but you need more time to edit it? Not a problem! Just let us know and we can extend this period for you (support@zapptales.com).

All your settings are saved automatically. So, if you have to interrupt the editing process or if you simply need a small break, you can just close your browser. To return to your personal chat edition page, just click on the link we have sent you in the email ‘We have received your chat’. That way, you can continue creating your book at any time and print your most treasured Whatsapp conversations.

You can add your favourite picture as well as up to four pictures in a collage to the cover of your book.

In addition, you can upload pictures, videos, voice messages and notes anywhere you want. How cool is that! 🙂

  • Desktop: Activate ” Add media” located in the right upper part of the chat edition page and click on one of the plus signs
  • Mobile: Click on the plus symbol and then on one of the plus signs

You can not only print WhatsApp messages but also any other chat content you want to create yourself!

  • Desktop: To delete a picture, video or voice message, just activate “Edit” and click on the x symbol in the upper right corner of the picture. If you do so, the picture, video or voice message disappears and a placeholder appears instead when activating “add media”.
  • Mobile: To delete a picture, video or voice message, just activate the pencil symbol and click on the x symbol in the upper right corner of the picture. If you do so, the picture, video or voice message disappears and a placeholder appears instead.

By the way: If you don’t want any videos or voice messages in your book, you can simply deactivate them on the editing page. 😊

Yes, of course! zapptales lets you print your entire chat or specific parts of your chat – just as you like.

  • Desktop: Just activate the “Edit mode” and click on the eye symbol within the message that you do not want to show in your book. This hides the respective message. If you want to hide an entire day just click on the date shown in the small blue box in the chat. As long as you are in the “Edit mode” hidden messages are greyed out, but still visible (so you can find them later, should you change your mind). Once you deactivate the “Edit mode” you can see your chat the way it will later be printed in your book – without the hidden messages.
  • Mobile: Just click the pen symbol in the top right hand corner and then on the eye symbol within the message you do not want to show in your book. This hides the respective message.   • Mobile: To change the chat background just go to “Chat”, click on the wheel symbol and select one of the many backgrounds available;

Our chat edition page is available in English, Spanish, German, Italian and Dutch. If you want to change the language to any one of these, please follow these steps:

  • Click in the address bar of your browser while you are on the chat edition page;
  • You will see a country code (such as .de, for example) after the address of the website (https://app.zapptales.com);
  • To change the language, just replace this country code by “en”, “es”, “nl” or “it” and hit enter;

If your chat has more then 500 pages, it is automatically divided into volumes after you order your book. And this is how it’s done:

  • The pages are spread evenly across the volumes, so that no volume is thicker than the other one! For example, if your chat has 1500 pages, it will automatically be divided into 3 volumes with 500 pages each.
  • The dedication on the first page will be printed on the first page of the first volume. The dedication on the last page will be printed on the last page of the last volume.
  • The price is always calculated according to the total number of pages, no matter whether your chat is divided into volumes or not.

And what will the covers look like? Each cover has the number of the volume printed below the cover picture. Just like in this example:

Our software is automatically dividing your book into volumes if it has more than 500 pages. How exactly this works, is explained in the last question.

However, you might want to choose on which days your books are divided, maybe you want to create different covers and dedications for your volumes. Currently, there’s no automated way for this. Yet, there’s a trick to do it manually. This is how it works:

Before we start, we’d again like remind you that only 500 pages per book are possible.

  1. When you have uploaded your chat, you first select a start and end date for volume 1 using the calendar in the chat edition page.
  2. Now you design volume 1 as you wish using all the design possibilities zapptales offers 😊 You can also add a number to the cover to know which volume it is.
  3. When you’re done with volume 1 you can add the book to your cart.
  4. Afterwards, you choose a start and end date for volume 2. The start date is the first day after the end date of volume 1.
  5. Now you can design volume 2 as you would like to have it and use all the editing possibilities zapptales offers 😊 You can also add a number to the cover to know which volume it is.
  6. When you’re done with volume 2 you can add the book to your cart. When doing so, you’ll be informed that there is already a book in your shopping cart. Please choose “Add”.
  7. When you’re done with all your volumes, you can simply go to the shopping cart and place your order 😊

In case you want to create more volumes, you can of course repeat step 4 to 6 until you’re done 😊
